Portnall Road, Maida Vale, London W9 (UK)
Stage: Completed
Year: 2017
The project consists of a total internal refurbishment, rear extension and conversion of a 1-bed to a 2-bed flat.
The new layout sees a reconfiguration of the front garden to allow a sunken forecourt with a seating area to the front of the house. Internally, two double bedrooms to the rear and front of the house are separated by a centrally located shower room.
A small light well was introduced between the new rear extension and rear bedroom, allowing daylight and outdoor space deep inside the new layout. The new kitchen, living and dining area was sunk in to increase ceiling height, maximising daylight via large fixed glass panels and a glass roof along the side.
The undulating brick wall becomes a main material feature internally, while framing the external light well on one end and turning into a garden wall on the other end. Externally, a gold fin connects the more solid part of the extension, cladded in weathered Corten steel, with the more permeant glass side, while the black brick serves as common denominator between internal and external materials.
