Fitzjames Avenue, Croydon, London CR0 (UK)

Stage: Completed

Year: 2017

The project comprises a total internal refurbishment of a detached three-storey high house with a full width rear extension and loft conversion.

Our approach has been to redefine the idea of a modern, suburban ‘cottage’ house, while offering a completely new internal layout. The emphasis has been on creating a high central hall that connects each storey vertically and horizontally.

The main communal space on the ground floor has an open-plan layout, with generous views of the garden. These two areas - indoor and outdoor - are connected through a landscaped patio.

The top floor sees a total transformation, revealing the full height of the ceiling. Its triangular shape enlivens the space, emphasising the double height volume and letting in ample natural light.

Externally, the combination of a herringbone brick pattern on the rear extension, the rendered façade and the plaster reveals around the first floor windows, challenge the traditional model of a suburban house, while a new, more orderly fenestration strengthens the relationship of each elevation with the surrounding context.
